The Gardens of La Ballue
The remarkable chateau's mannerist gardens, listed historical monument, with pillars of yew, topiary twists and swirls and a labyrinth are agremented with sculptures carefully palced throughout the grounds.
From the hanging gardens an extraordinary view on the bocage, stretching out over small valleys haloed in the characteristic blues reminiscent of paintings by the Dutch primitives. The gardens present 13 surprises for the visitor, a series of theatrical gardens in the baroque or mannerist style of the sixteenth centuries. These includes a fernery, a water trap, a scented chamber, an open air theatre, a temple of Diana, a maze and many other delights.
