Iron age artifacts, a cathedral begun as a simple church in 672 and now the splendid repository of the Mappa Mundi (c1275), a castle demolished by Cromwell in 1642 - these are just a few of the tantalising treasures of the Saxon city of Hereford. You could argue that the River Wye that winds through the town or Castle House in the heart of the city, are others. Castle House is a recently and expensively renovated luxury hotel with 15 bedrooms, as individual as the names they bear, honouring, as they do, the worthies who were born or lived in Hereford: Kemble, Garrick, Nell Gwynn and others.

A delightful flowering garden slopes down from the terrace to the old castle moat. The hotel has its own farm, producing fresh, organic herbs, vegetables, eggs, poultry, pork and, of course, Herefordshire beef, England's finest. Along with the creative skills of chef Stuart McLeod, the restaurant has justly won many awards and international recognition. A delightful mix of many cultural pleasures.
